Sheppard took over as JLP Central Transport general manager in 2002, having previously been fleet engineer and deputy head of transport.
However, he boasts the classic humble roots. 1 did my original apprenticeship in a Leyland dealership before I came here. I started as a mechanic and worked my way up from mechanic to charge-hand, foreman, service manager, manager and then moved into London head off ice as fleet engineer.
"After 18 months I moved the whole of Central Transport down here [to Bracknell]. There was no pont being stuck in the West End of London in expensive offices."
Having tasted life in the workshop, Sheppard reckons: "There's no substitute for having been there and got the T-shirt. It gives you a good insight into what they do, you know what you expect them to do and what they can deliver. if you haven't got that basic background knowledge I think you're going to struggle and a lot of people do as you can see."
