• Trucks are less likely to be involved in road accidents than other road users "but when they are involved the impact on traffic flows is much greater", says the Automobile Association.
The AA has compiled statistics for the first nine months of the year which show that trucks were involved in just 2.7% of road incidents.
But the average delay caused by an accident involving a truck was 2hr 9min, compared with
an average for all road users of lhr 25min.
The worst incident involving a heavy truck occurred on Sunday 31 August near Junction 12 of the Ml. It left the motorway closed both ways for 13hr 30min.
However, the worst hold-up in the period covered by the report was on Monday 10 March near Junction 2 of the M42, when the motorway was closed completely for 28 hours.
