• Truck driver Andrew Meynell spent 19 hours stuck in his cab when it became wedged in a narrow lane in a Devon village last week.
The Lancashire-based driver was delivering chemicals when he made a wrong turning into the village of Hill Bridge Weir,
Local people rallied to the stricken trucker's aid. "Not only did they keep my spirits up with food and drink but when I was freed next morning they provided me with breakfast," he said. But he has vowed that his first trip into Devon will be his last.
When he arrived at the village in his 38-tonne ariic it was dark and raining. He looked for somewhere to turn round but the road became increasingly narrow. "It was quite frightening as I went past a sign saying it was a single track with passing places but I had never seen anything like it for narrowness before."
The truck was eventually pulled out backwards—it is estimated the bodywork repairs will cost hundreds of pounds.
