• Within weeks trucks which meet the Euro-2 emissions levels could be offered a discount on Continental motorway vignettes.
The move has been proposed by EC Transport Commissioner Neil Kinnock to encourage operators to invest in cleaner running trucks. Speaking at a conference organised by the Freight Transport Association, Kinnock's advisor Gert Jan Koopman said a cheaper Eurovignette for Euro-2 trucks could be in place before Christmas.
Following this, EU governments could be asked to reduce vehicle excise duty for cleaner trucks. Financial incentives could also be offered to vehicles fitted with air kits and lownoise tyres. Ultra environmentally friendly vehicles could even be granted a rebate in diesel costs under the scheme, which is designed to force dirty vehicles off the roads by making them too expensive to run.
