A NEW road bridge which links Tayside with the British trunk road network has attracted vociferous criticism from hauliers.
The £9m Friarton Bridge over the Tay near Perth, opened only last month, has been described as too high, too confusing, and lacking in sufficient safety barriers.
Dundee and Perth Road Haulage Association representative Philip Ridgway has given support to some of his drivers who want to continue to drive through Perth in winter.
They fear that, because the bridge is so high, it will ice over easily in winter and put both men and vehicles at serious risk.
Mr Ridgway said: "Although we are concerned about the lack of lighting on the bridge, we are more concerned about the height of the safety barriers. They are only 39in high — not even the height of a lorry wheel."
He added that the kerb of the bridge is only 47in from the roadway and that any vehicle could mount it and collide with the barrier.
He continued: "Hauliers in this area are also very concerned about the strength of the safety barriers, but in view of the drop down into the river below there is no room for error."
RHA eoncern has been echoed by objections from the Freight Transport Association which has complained about the lack of lighting, potential dazzle effect, curved approaches, and apparently flimsy barriers on the bridge.
An FTA spokesman said a meeting of its members was being held in Perth this week and further action may follow this.
