Mackā¢ MACK is showing a normal control 6x4 chassis at the 1978 Motor Show. It is fully equipped by Wreckers International Limited of Hertford, who claim it is the heaviest recovery vehicle in the world.
Power is produced from a Mack END676 engine developing 212kW (285bhp) at 1,800rpm. A six-speed Maxitorque gearbox has a triple layshaft, each with centre bearing, which drives through a Mack doublereduction bogie, also fitted with automatic power divider.
The Wreckers International Bulldog Recovery equipment is completely new to the UK and totally British-made. It has a lift-and-tow capacity of 25 tons and a towing capacity of 75 to 100 tons. This is made possible by the inclusion of an hydraulically-operated mobile stabilizer which is able to compensate for load transfer.
In the closed position the boom is rated at 30 tons and 15 ton when fully extended to 2.5m (8ft 4in). The left-andtow cylinders in the boom operate independently of the twin winches, which are rated at 15 tons each.
The first model went for export and has been used in the USA since last April.
