I suppose it was predictable that those responsible for some elements of the stand fitting for the Car and Commercial Motor Show at NEC should indulge in their biennial practice of brinkmanship.

This first International Show at NEC was to be a marvellous show-window for the British vehicle industry and could be ruined through the irresponsibility and greed of a few individuals whose skills hardly exceed those of a weekend do-ityourself enthusiast.

They, like others, contracted to do the job at a price and under set conditions, and then before completion they sought to change the contract. Could a haulage contractor engage in such blackmail practice with his customers' traffic? Of course he could, but being both responsible and respectable, he would not.

But perhaps out of this there might be a lesson for those who are displaying their wares at NEC. Has anyone the right to agree to supply goods and services at a price and then increase the price before delivery?

Vehicles ordered at showroom price should surely be supplied at that price, irrespective of interim price increases. The customers should not be penalised because the manufacturer is unable to supply.
