Curtain up
A unique curtain-raiser to the Motor Show was staged on Sunday when 180 vintage, veteran and modern commercial vehicles and cars drove along a 37-mile route from Stoneleigh through the centres of Coventry, and Birmingham to the National Exhibition Centre.
The motorcade was sponsored by Bayer UK Ltd, many of whose materials — plastics, polyurethanes and synthetic rubbers — and construction techniques are found in the vehicles. One of them is the remarkable Bayer experimental car built in 1967 to demonstrate the possibilites of new engineering materials.
The organisation of the event falls on the Institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers, whose title is as olde worlde as many of the vehicles that take part in it.
