FALMOUTH is making a bid to establish a ro-ro ferry terminal to take the pressure off Plymouth, and has distributed a questionnaire to local businesses.
The Port of Falmouth Chamber of Commerce says it does not want to develop the port as an alternative to Plymouth, but it doubts whether Plymouth can expand to meet potential Cornish use of the ferry service to Roscoff.
It also sees Falmouth as a cost-saving factor for Cornish industry, as two-thirds of the county's industry and population is centred within 20 miles of Redruth.
In addition, Falmouth could maintain its status as a port of entry if such developments as a ro-ro ferry are introduced.
Businesses have until November 30 to reply to the Chamber's questionnaire, and the final report on the proposal will be published early in the next year.
