• Five drivers employed by Newell & Wright Transport have been fined £3,000 at Sheffield Crown Court after pleading guilty to charges involving the falsification of tachograph charts. A sixth driver was given a conditional discharge due to ill health.
Prosecuting, Philip Bingham said the six drivers had each pleaded guilty to three specimen offences in November 1993. After a police investigation it emerged that drivers working for Newell 8z Wright Transport had tampered with their tachographs. Vehicles were driven between two locations while the tachograph showed the drivers were resting.
Bingham said he accepted that the drivers were doing this so they could get home.
In mitigation, it was said that three of the defendants, although employed by Newell & Wright Transport, received instructions from a company in Felixstowe. There was considerable pressure for delivery times to be met.
