A LONG-RUNNING pay dispute between Kent-based SCA Transport and nearly 130 of its drivers is likely to be settled as it has been referred to the conciliation service,Acas.
The company was facing strike action after management imp osed a 5% pay increase, which the Transport & General Workers Union refused to accept (CM 28 July).
Bill Lamb, T&G regional industrial organiser, says the company subsequently added a further 0.5% to its imposed increase and promised a 4% rise next year.
"That offer was marginally rejected, by about five votes, so we're seeking to resolve this at Acas before we go anywhere else he says.
He adds that the new offer would boost hourly pay to just over £8 an hour, still well short of the union's £10 target.
Swedish-owned SCA, which mainly works in the paper and packaging industry says nearly a quarter of its drivers are not members of the T&G.
