THE NORTHERN Ireland government has given a green light to the construction of a new 12km dual carriageway on a busy stretch of the A.
The section of road, currently a single carriageway, runs between Randalstown and Castledawson and carries almost 16,000 vehicles a day. The cost of the £34m scheme will be met by the government.
The road, a direct link between Belfast and Londonderry, was pinpointed by the Freight Transport Association as one of five primary trade routes in the province blighted by major delays.
News of the approval was welcomed by the FTA. Tom Wilson, head of policy for the ETA in Northern Ireland, says: "This scheme has been desired for a long time; it's critical that the trade routes are good."
Work on the scheme is scheduled to start in 2007.
