A PUBLIC inquiry into the construction of a long-awaited second bridge at Poole harbour is under way, to consider the need to improve access to the ferry port for trucks.
The four-week inquiry will examine the proposed £14.1m Twin Sails Bridge a lifting bridge planners hope will cut heavy traffic.
Chris Francombe, transport
policy manager for Poole council, says the need for a new bridge is overwhelming and likely to intensify. Traffic movements across the harbour channel arc expected to climb from 17.500 a day in 2004 to 36,000 by 2021.
The new bridge would take 44tonne trucks and not he subject to the existing 5m height limit.
John Clarke, freight director for Brittany Ferries which runs up to four sailings a day on the PooleCherbourg route says the new bridge will be widely welcomed.
The congestion at the moment can he a nightmare. The problem is the amount of traffic that can use the seabourne route underneath the bridge. In the height of the summer, the delays can be interminable," he says.
