NORTH WALES police force has revealed that half of all truck drivers stopped in its roadside checks were driving illegally.
However, most of those drivers were from outside the UK, with many of them coming from former Eastern bloc countries. Chief superintendant Geraint Anwyl said the problem was likely to be widespread across the UK, but North Wales has a problem with trucks making a dash for the ferry to Ireland from Holyhead.
But, he added, most drivers working for reputable firms abided by the rules.
VOSA said that new legislation giving it powers to levy on-the-spot lines would be in place next year.
