AxMINSTER COUNCIL says an HGV ban could be one solution to its trafic issues, despite opposition from traders and haulage irms.
Local councillor Brian Watts, who chaired a meeting on the subject earlier this week, insists no decision has been taken and that a north-south relief road is the longterm goal.
He adds that an interim measure is needed to divert lorries away from the Devon town. “There’s a problem with north-south trafic that has to cut through the centre of the town,” he says. “Axminster is not designed for large lorries.” But a driver for Plymouth-based Trevor Denford Transport says: “I can see the reasoning behind it, but then how would trucks get into the town centre?”
