I READ WITH interest the article regarding the impact that the shortage of certain key components is having on the supply of trailers within the UK market (CM 6 September,Trailing behind demand') and, in particular, the speculation that due to the scarcity of axles some manufacturers might not be able to fulfil current trailer orders until next Easter.
While accepting that, in common with all other trailer manufacturers, Schmitz Cargobull has experienced a degree of component supply difficulty recently,I am pleased to he able to report that we are currently quoting average lead times of 8-10 weeks from the receipt of an order to final delivery for standard refrigerated and curtainsider trailers built in the UK.
This, I believe, is the shortest lead time currently offered by any UK trailer manufacturer.
We are able to do this thanks to the significant recent investment made by the Schmitz Cargobull Group in the redesign of both the curtainsider and reefer production lines at our factory at Harelaw, just outside Newcastle upon Tyne.
Our refrigerated trailer production process has been completely upgraded: as a result, reefer manufacturing capacity at Harelaw has increased by more than 50%.The changes to the reefer plant followed a six-figure investment in our curtainsider factory undertaken earlier this year which enabled us to boost curtainsider and dry-freight boxyan output by some 20%.
In addition, I believe it is worth remembering that, as has been well documented in CM, Schmitz Cargobull produces its own range of axles at its factory in Al tenberge.Germany.The design and build quality of these products is second to none. As a result our clients have the reassurance of knowing that the supply of their newly ordered trailers will not be held up by the growing demand for Schmitz Cargobull's curtainsiders and reefers from all sectors of the haulage and logistics industry.
