k N appeal to drivers to do all in their "k power to combat the lorry thief, is Lade this week by Mr. G. K. Newman, :cretary general, Road Haulage ssociation. He writes:-
" Thieves who recently stole a load of garettes valued at approximately 10,000 stopped the vehicle by means of car parked across the road. One of the deves opened the cab door and struck le driver in the face with an iron bar, lthough his injuries were so severe that ley required plastic surgery, the gang :pt him with them in a car for nearly vo hours.
"These simple but distressing facts should be a warning to every honest driver to do everything he can to rid the roads of the lorry thief. There is action that all drivers can take. The Vehicles' Security Committee of the Road Haulage Association has suggested that they should pass all information of suspicious occurrences on the road to the police. Furthermore, the Association has offered a reward for information leading to the conviction of lorry thieves," added Mr. Newman.
"There are enough eyes on the road. It is up to us to use them and I am confident that the reward will not be the main incentive."
