for trucks too tall for tunnel
DUBLIN CITY Council has denied reports that trucks too tall for the Dublin Port Tunnel will be allowed to continue travelling through central Dublin for a year after it opens next spring.
Tim O'Sullivan. executive manager of the Roads and Traffic Department, expressed surprise at the remarks attributed to his boss, Owen Keegan, in the Irish Independent newspaper last month.
Keegan was quoted as saying that "supertrucks" would be given the year's grace."Our HGV traffic management plan has yet to be finalised," says O'Sullivan. "However, I can't see any scenario where we would allow tall trucks to have a year's free driving through the city centre."
O'Sullivan stresses that the gardai will enforce the ban vigorously:"Their number-one priority is law and order but traffic regulations are also high up there."
He hints that the Republic's Department of Transport plans to impose a maximum height for commercial vehicles will probably be given the go-ahead.
However, he concludes: "It won't be effective immediately. I understand that there will be a period of several years where operators will be able to flush tall vehicles out of their fleets."
