as a road transport and freight company in Sheffield before branching into tank building as Road Tankers Northern in 1990. RTN took on staff from Charles Roberts Engineering when it closed in 1993. It moved to its Hoyland, Barnsley, premises in 1998. T&N bought Lakeland Tankers in 2000, recently relocating from Redditch to Lye where all final assembly and tank repair and refurbishment work is undertaken. The Innovator wI be built at Lye. Until now most of T&N's tanker activity has been in rigid tankers. RTN/Lakeland are well known brands with a combined output of around 18 rigid tankers a month. The group has built a number of LPG tank trailers and acted as importer for Spanish spirit tank trailer maker Caldal. T&N managing director Frank Newell did consider buying the Crane Fruehauf operation but says: "I couldn't see a business case for it." Last year T&N group had a turnover of more than £33m of which a third came from its RTNI/Lakeland operations. •
