• The Freight Transport Association plans to boost drivers' communication skills by joining forces with Canterbury Christ Church University College to offer foreign language courses of "on the road" speak.
The scheme is designed to give drivers the work-related vocabulary they need when dealing with daily driving situations, such as Customs or the police. The FTA says that tradi tional language courses are too general and do not it the needs of international drivers.
The new programme, to be launched on 21 October at Salomons in Tunbridge Wells, will include a set of 10 language prompt cards in 12 language combinations including Bulgarian, French, German, Dutch and Polish. They represent key words and phrases for 10 specific situations identified by drivers and operators.
