A court decision involving
the company O'Donnell Plant Hire Ltd, of Units 1 and 2, Rhodes Street, Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne, and the Tyne and Wear Waste Regulation Joint Committee resulted in the company being fined ,a,000 and an additional .f200 for costs by the Gateshead Magistrates.
This was reported in the local and trade press.
The committee refused the company a licence to carry waste; the decision was, however, disputed and taken to appeal to Environment Secretary John Gummer. Although he felt the matter serious, he did not consider it serious enough to warrant refusal of the registration.
The original court case and its decision was reported in the local press and trade publications, which caused the company and its customers some concern.
The company was very disappointed that the same coverage was not given by the press when the decision was made by the Environmental Secretary. J O'Donnell, Plant manager; O'Donnell Plant Hire Ltd, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
