BRAKE, THE ROAD safety campaign group, has published statistics showing that 25% of British road deaths involve 'atwork drivers.
The charity says Department for Transport figures reveal that 850 people were killed
e, and 6.012 seriously injured I in crashes involving at-work drivers in 2005. It is calling on UK companies to ensure
they have risk-management practices in place to reduce deaths and injuries on the road.
Brake has launched Busy Enough to Kill?, a governmentfunded DVD targeted at company drivers which includes interviews with the families of drivers killed on the road.
Andrew Howard, head of road safety at the AA Motoring Trust, says: "My concern is that while the message on safety might be beginning to get through to responsible employers, what about those at the bottom end of the scale or at-work drivers who are under today's pressures of time and congestion?"
Research carried out by the AA Motoring Trust last year showed that van drivers were often unaware of their employer's policies on road safety.
