• Hot on the heels of CM's Communications in Transport issue (last week) comes news of the use of radio in foiling a hijacking attempt.
On Tuesday night a gang in a bogus police car attempted to steal a lorry loaded with £25,000 worth of cigarettes. They stopped the vehicle — an NCL van — on the A20 Swanley by-pass, Kent, waving the driver into a lay-by.
The thieves leapt from the car and tried to smash the cab windows but the driver set off the audible alarm and made radio contact with his base and the hijackers made off.
