• The time was right for another and third attempt at instituting night deliveries in London, Mr D. Baker, transport director of Tesco Stores Ltd, told listeners to the Radio London programme On the Move on Tuesday. Supermarkets were now staffed for shelf restocking in the evening and therefore the premises would be open and the security risk would be minimized he said.
Mr K. Fielding, BRSL head of marketing, said his company was already engaged in looking at night-delivery problems and could offer a facility for grouping traffic for a number of suppliers for delivery to one or more outlets during the "silent hours". Mr R. Beckham, distribution controller of RHM Foods, while welcoming the grou page proposal, could not agree that delivery throughout the night was desirable.
Mr Baker added that where shops were beneath flats, night deliveries would not be acceptable, and the three men agreed that the project merited further examination in the light of the lessons learnt in the past two exercises.
