• Profits before tax of £32.4m were announced by British Leyland last week for the year ended September 30, 1971. This compares with the previous year's figure of £3.9m. The corporation's earnings also increased considerably from £0.6m to £17.1m.
Sales for the year included 193,000 trucks, buses, vans and other commercial vehicles out of a total of 1,057,000 units. This total figure compares with 984,000 for the previous year.
Lord Stokes, the corporation's chairman, said in London on Friday, that he held out little hope of an immediate recovery in the truck and bus division, which while still making profits faced substantially smaller markets at home and abroad. Increases in road and general building should help improve the situation but with little likely effect for another six months.
