• Temperature-controlled distribution specialist Bryan Haulage has been given permission to build a frozen-food storage depot at its Okehampton, Devon site, even though the project will break planning regulations.
The company told West Devon Borough Council that if planningpermission for the 1,125m2 depot was rejected local jobs would be lost and the whole operation might close.
The new store is planned for Bryan's site at Lower Gorhuish Farm, Northlew near Okehampton, where the company has offices and workshops. Traffic from the site will increase to five or six HGVs a day.
Bryan operates 30 temperature-controlled vehicles with 60 staff on a frozen food contracts.
General manager Keith Hotchkiss says: "Our present customers were keen for us to get involved in storage. There's no future in just remaining in haulage." The depot is due to be complete in about 12 months.
