• The Road Haulage Association is stepping up its efforts to woo operators with a new range of benefits including a "pay-as-you-go" road tax scheme; vehicle inspections; and a free year's use of its internet-based backload system.
Director-general Steven Norris says the RHA will offer to pay members' annual VED bills and will then bill operators a monthly amount "We've set it up so it will be cheaper than buying tax every six months," he explains. "It's less than what the DVLA would charge for two six-month tax discs." Following the establishment of a pilot scheme in Scotland, the RHA is to launch a national vehicle inspection scheme to rival the FTA scheme. "Over the next two years we will have about 20 inspectors in the field," says Norris. The service will also be available to non-members.
Having launched itself onto the internet at last year's TipCon, the RI-LA is offering Its website-based backload scheme free for a year.
—I The RHA plans another rally at Westminster next month as part of its series of "Fair Play on Fuel" protests.
