Self-employed hauliers shocked by demands for double their expected tax could be victims of an error by the Inland Revenue, which admits making mistakes affecting 800,000 of the country's nine-million self-employed. Statements of Accounts sent out by the Inland Revenue show self-employed tax payers their past payments and their future liability. In 800,000 cases tax payers were "inadvertently" led to believe that they should pay an amount on 31 January which is not actually due until 31 July.
