French-owned Transalliance UK and up to 10 of its drivers are in negotiations to settle a dispute over the loss of their jobs. Both sides seem confident about settling the issue before it goes 1.o an employment tribunal. The United Road Transport Union, which is representing at least six of the drivers, says the men were unfairly dismissed after they refused to work abroad. Southern URTIJ officer Malcolm Williams says the move broke employment law, leaving some of the drivers with long service asking for compensation of up to 28,000. Transalliance UK managing director Jon Segers denies the company acted wrongly, arguing that there was no verbal or written contract to suggest drivers could not be moved to international workâor that drivers were not fully Informed of the decision.
