A LITHUANIAN truck driver has been jailed for six months for attempting to smuggle 1,500kg of tobacco into the UK.
Bournemouth Crown Court head how Vladislavas Dauksevicius from Yashunaj was arrested during the afternoon of 4 February as he drove his truck from the Cherbourg-Poole freight ferry.
Customs officers searched the vehicle and found the hand rolling tobacco concealed in a consignment of car parts destined for Worcestershire — the duty evaded on the haul was estimated to be £189,000, Sentencing Dauksevcius, the judge said: You have pleaded guilty to a serious offence. I accept that in Lithuania being tempted into illegal activities to make money quickly may be worth more than a month's salary. It is not the way to behave and people who do this in this country will be punished. If they have assets they will be deprived of them."
