AN ATTEMPT to ban trucks from the road which runs past Pevenseā ,, Castle in East Sussex has been rejected by East Sussex County Council.
Parish councillors have been campaigning for the ban in an effort to protect the buildings from vibration. But the council says any change will have to wait until next year, when it publishes a new freight strategy for the county. Downgrading of the route to a `Croad' would also have implications for its maintenance budget.
Local operators say Pevensey already has far fewer trucks going through it than it did before the town's bypass opened in 2003.
Stephen Morgan, operations director of Eastbourne-based Dobbs Logistics, says:"Illsay that only about 20% of the trucks that used to go through Pevensey now go through the town. 1 used to drive through it, but stopped as soon as the A27 opened."
Many of the trucks which do still go through the centre of Pevensey are on their way to the Mountney Bridge industrial site, which cannot be reached by any other route.
