THE TRANSPORT & General Workers' Union is renewing its demands for the government to tackle the lack of roadside facilities for truck drivers.
Speaking at the union's biennial conference in Blackpool last week, representatives from the T&G's road transport commercial group said the union "deplores the lack of progress on behalf of the government and its Highways Agencies in not providing suitable roadside facilities for road haulage drivers".
North-East regional delegate Walter Longden added: "1We] call upon the government to finally and speedily put in place adequate and affordable roadside facilities, with proper eating and overnight facilities for transport drivers."
The T&G also called on the government to increase the number of truck parking spaces in every local authority area.
• Pan-European reefer organisation Transfrigoroute is asking members to send a letter urging their national governments to provide truck parking spaces equipped with electrical plug-in points for reefers.
