developing a new 16-litre engine (CM 7-13 June), ending speculation that it would use Cummins products at the top end, Volvo revealed the newcomer during our Swedish visit. Although technical information was sparse, we did glean some details.
The basic technology will mirror the latest 12-litre engines. One of the key themes of any engine designed to go beyond Eura-3 is cooling, and to this end the 16-litre's ancillary geartrain is moved to the rear of the block. This will also aid the use of turbo-compounding.
Injection equipment on the engine we saw was by Delphi. We believe that development is further advanced than was previously thought, and that certain "F1112s" currently operating on heavy-duty applications in Australia and elsewhere are powered by the new motor. Expect to see it on sale in 2003.
