has admitted that last week it sold diesel from up to 200 filling stations in the SouthEast which could block fuel injectors, damage catalysts and cause black exhaust smoke in commercial vehicles.
It is believed that up to 2,000 operators could be in line for compensation after neat cycle oil was accidentally introduced into a storage tank of diesel at Coryton Refinery and Terminal on Saturday 9 May.
"We had the right ingredients," says a BP spokesman, "but the wrong quantity of cycle oil."
The problem was not noticed until 15:00hrs last Wednesday when the 200 stations were told by phone to stop selling diesel.
Checks at the stations were being completed as CM went to press. No diesel was being sold at those stations until investigations were complete.
BP is currently approaching its fleet customers to assess the scale of the problem. The company does not know how the problem occurred: it plans to hold an inquiry.
