[2057] "FOR HIRE writes :-" I should Like to know if you could please assist me in the following ? I am starting a. motor-haulage business this winter, and am not quite clear as to the charges for same. My vehicle is a 30 h.p. two-and-a-half-tonner. I wondered if you could get me a price list from such firms at Pickford's, etc., as to their charges for furniture removals by contract or by mileage."
ANSWER.—Pickford's and other contracting firms do not issue price lists. They quote a charge for every job. If you want to make money you must get as near a revenue of is. per mile run as possible.. That means, if you took a. load 30 miles in one direction, and had to run back empty, you would need to charge a3 for the work. With a lorry of that capacity, it is only on exceptionally easy work that you could with any advantage to yourself take less. II you are going to be subjected to big delays at the loading points. you must add something to cover the wasted time.
