[1176] " R.T." (Andover) writes : —" Some time ago, a, vehicle under my charge began to consume a much larger quantity of petrol than had hitherto been the
case. I examined the carburetter carefully, and found that the petrol level was too high. I moved the collar which operates the balance levers on the alve about ,i-32nd in. upwards. The petrol still flooded over the top of the jet, however, and so I next examined the valve stem, and, although the tapered part appeared to be in good condition, I ground it in carefully. The leakage still continued, however, and I came to the conclusion that the valve seat itself was at fault.
In order to aher this, I procured a piece of round silver steel of the same diameter as the valve, and tapered it to the same angle at the bottom. With a small three-cornered file, I cut a few teeth on the tapered part, making a small rose bit. I next placed the cover upon the float chamber, and used it as the guide for the improvised cutter. A little twisting cut the new seat for the valve, and the old needle was dropped into place and lightly ground in again: I found that this entirely overcame the flooding trouble."
