A Note From Our Paris Correspondent.
Taxicab drivers and the few French commercialmotor owners who are allowed to own utility vehicles are experiencing considerable trouble in keeping their vehicles in operation. Petrol has become so difficult to obtain that the retail dealers who handled nothing else but motor fuel have closed their shops. Many of the grocers, oil merchants and garage proprietors who make the sale of petrol a part of their business have had to put out the sign "essence manque," while others will only supply their regular clients, a gallon being the maximum amount sold at one time. I have personally been offered one quart. The lowest price at which petrol can be bought retail outside Paris is now 2s. per gallon. In certain districts it has risen to 2s. 6d. According to relport it is likely to rise to 3s. 6d. In the city of Paris i the price s already practically as. per gallon, but this is partly owing to the city tax. No benzole is available for civilian use.
The rise in the price of petrol is declared to be due to important 'requisitions by the military authorities in view of the increased aeroplane and Motor-lorry activities. There has been no additional taxation'on petrol since the outbreak of the war.
