• Chichester-based United Marine Aggregates has managed to combine the manoeuvrability of a four-wheel 18tonner with the payload of a sixwheeler by having a mid-lift axle fitted to a 4x2 MAN M2000.
The extra axle, which adds 980kg to the kerb weight, was installed on the 18.284F chassis by Wheelbase Engineering of Blackburn. The tipper is currently plated at 23 tonnes but UMA believes 24.2 tonnes is possible. At 23 tonnes it pays £130 less VED than an 18-tonner.
With a lightweight I PPG aggregates body lifted by Edbro CX11 front-end gear and
covered by a Transcover electrically operated sheeting system, the MAN weighs in at less than eight tonnes. Other equipment includes a sealed tailgate and a Comex in-cab CCTV system.
