he slow pace of life on the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides is baffling the latest in 20th century traffic technology. Stornoway recently ground to a halt as vehicles queued for almost a mile at a busy junction. A sensor, which turns traffic lights red if no vehicles are approaching, was confused by the snail-like movement of the traffic and stayed red, believing the road was clear.
Every time the lights did turn green they quickly switched back to red, because the drivers were so slow to react. The council is considering resetting the lights to accommodate the readions of the laid-back island driver but they're in no hurry to do anything about it...
