Being a binman can often be a hazardous and sticky job. But refuse collectors in Drogheda, Ireland, found themselves facing a new peril when their truck was taken hostage by residents of the Moneymore estate.
The Drogheda Residents Against Bin Charges were protesting against the E110 annual charges recently imposed by the corporation. The binmen had orders only to empty vrheelie bins with red stickers on, showing that the levy had been paid. 'Vie
marched in front of the truck and appealed for residents to come out," explained Harry Phelan of the protest group. For most of the day the crew was holed up in their cab as people from the estate threw rubbish into the back of the wagon. Residents threatened to Be down in the road to stop the truck moving.
The siege continued into the night. The situation was eventually resolved but I bet those binmen don't hold out much hope of a Christmas box this year.
