OVERNIGHT parking in the streets of London has been almost eliminated by parking bans, according to Greater London Council transport committee vice-chairman, Enid Wistrich.
Mrs Wistrich, the committee's spokesman on freight, said that over three-quarters of the lorries which used to park in London overnight have been stopped.
"This has been one of the GLC's success stories. When we began introducing these bans nearly three years ago, about 12,000 heavy lorries were being parked in the streets at night.
"Night bans now cover areas where 9,600 of them were parked. By the Spring only a handful of boroughs, mostly where the problems were slight, will be excluded," said Mrs Wistrich.
But the council is becoming concerned about the parking of unattached trailers with no identification in streets overnight, and she said the GLC would support any pressure for urgent Government action on the problem.
