I wonder how many delivery men are injured in the course of their duty during the winter. am thinking especially of the milk and bread roundsmen and refuse collectors.
The other morning I counted 40 such men on the way to the office, between 6.30 and 7.30. With one exception they were all dressed in dark blue or black clothing. The exception wore a yellow cycling coat; he was employed by a small independent dairy company.
The rest were employees of nationally known companies. It seemed to me, as I narrowly missed the first one, that a Dayglo jacket, as advertised on page 61 last week, should be a statutory requirement. Then I got to thinking that perhaps the need had never arisen; no one had been killed no one had been injured . . yet. Then I got to thinking some more. Why wait for that to happen?
