'Security guard' thieves sentenced to 10 years

THREE MEN who masqueraded as security guards to raid a series of trucks in the South-East have been jailed for a total of 10 years.
A six-month surveillance operation, led by Kent Police's Organised Crime Unit and codenamed Figaro, revealed that the men had been mainly targeting foreign drivers who were parked in secluded areas.
The raiders, who used knives to slash their way in to the trailers, stole goods worth around £4,500 within the space of five nights.
The three Essex men, Anthony Grunwell, of Romforcl, David Hardy of Wickford and Stephen Turley of Romford, were caught following the operation involving officers from Kent, co-operating with Essex,Suffolk and the Metropolitan Police.
They were arrested in Wickford Essex. in October 2003 and later charged with conspiracy to steal.
Grun well and Turley pleaded guilty and Hardy was found guilty last month. Grunwell was sentenced to four years' imprisonment at Canterbury Crown Court, with a recommendation that at least two-thirds of the sentence should be served before he is eligible for release.
Hardy was sentenced to four years and three months' imprisonment with the same recommendation. Turley was given 30 months' imprisonment with a recommendation he serve at least half of the sentence.
