• Wincanton and Eddie Stobart are sliding towards a Transfer of Undertakings dispute with union chiefs after winning business from Rank Hovis and making 16 Rank llovis drivers redundant.
Transport & General Workers Union district officer Jennie Sandle has warned Wincanton and Eddie Stobart that they could be breaching the regulations if they do not take on the Southampton-based drivers when the work is transferred at the end of April (CM25-31 March).
Wincanton says it will interview the drivers alongside other applicants but is under no obligation to take them on. Eddie Stobart declined to comment.
Sandle says that under the Transfer of Undertakings rules the Rank Hovis drivers should be guaranteed continuity of employment with the same terms and conditions.
The TGWU is also taking Rank Hovis to an industrial tribunal on 30 April over the redundancy of three shop stewards who were among the 16 drivers to lose their jobs.
Sandle believes the shop stewards were targeted because of their union activities. Rank Hovis says it cannot comment because it is still in talks with the union.
