• The war of words over contracts for road rescue in North Yorkshire blew up this week as the RAC threatened to sue recovery consultant Bob Toon for comments allegedly made by him over the RAC's business in the county
The RAC says its patience snapped over statements allegedly made by Tom over its methods of securing and operating the contrail for police recovery clearance work in North Yorkshire (CM March 11-17).
The row centres on the police decision in North Yorkshire to place the contract for road clearance with the RAC after a successful pilot scheme.
The RAC claims it can sue Toon for defamation over statements allegedly suggesting that the RAC did not win the contract in a straightforward manner and that it is charging members of corn petitor motoring organisations for removing their vehicles.
But Toon stands by his accusation that motorists affiliated with other motoring organisations are effectively being charged ..C15 by the RAC when the police order their vehicles to be moved.
He says the sub-contracted operator is forced to pass on the cost to the customer. The RAC is pressurising the Association of Vehicle Recovery Operators—which originally employed Toon to help it to bid for the North Yorkshire recovery contract—to say if it sees itself as a wade group or simply as a commercial organisation which is in the business of touting for recovery business. AVRO has declined to comment.
