LLOYD'S Register of Shipping reports that, at the end of June, 199 containerships were on order and under construction throughout the world. Germany leads the league with 60 of these orders, followed a long way behind by the US, with 27. Holland with 26. Japan with 12 and Britain with 11.
German shipbuilders have made an all-out effort to obtain orders in the face of strong competition and have been successful in obtaining substantial orders from British consortia, namely OCL and ACT.
A.G. Weser, of Bremen, has recently secured orders for three vessels from Sea Land and two more are to be built in Holland. These five will be the fastest and most expensive yet ordered.
