The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act introduced the idea that convictions could be regarded as 'spent' after a set period of time (which varies according to the length of imprisonment imposed). This meant that convicts were not obliged to declare any spent convictions when applying for a job, visa or other sensitive documents. This concept will continue even if the new proposals are accepted, except in very limited cases.
