• The 1900 bus drivers and conductors employed by Edinburgh Corporation transport department received a pleasant Christmas surprise in their wage packets at the weekend — an extra £20.
A department official explained: "There are certain circumstances in which a man loses his productivity bonus, which is normally part of his weekly wage. This could happen, for example, if he was off work through illness.
"By agreement with the employees' trade union, the money is paid into a fund which over the past 18 months has built up to around £38,000 It was agreed that the cash should be split up among the crews and paid just before Christmas."
