limit will make motorway driving even more hazardous. "The slower you are forced to go, the smaller the gaps between vehicles becomes," he says. "Lorries will be clogging up the inside lane and car drivers will be cutting in between us at the last moment to leave at an exit. The Government would be better off teaching motorists to be more aware of heavy goods vehicles on motorways."
Southampton-based small haulier John Stride says the scheme is short-sighted. "I'm not convinced that slowing down traffic shortens journey times," he says. "We need more roads rather than lower speed limits."
