A BUSINESS leader warns residents could delay long-awaited improvements to the A14 around Huntingdon, Cambs, by demanding one section is re-routed.
The Offords A14 Action Group is going to the High Court, demanding a review into how the route was decided.
But John Bridge, chief executive of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, says this will give the Highways Agency an excuse for delaying the £490m improvement between Ellington and Fen Ditton.
"We've already had lots of delays for lots of reasons," he adds. "Any action that further delays this essential work being undertaken is totally unacceptable to the majority of people and businesses we speak to."
Former RHA chairman Bridge, says funding was announced for the road in 2003, but it has now been dropped from the budget.
The action group accepts the need for improvements, but mem bers claim the section south of Huntingdon is so different from the original proposed by the Highways Agency in 2001 that it is effectively a different route. Spokesman Chris Pook says the new route is within half a mile of Off ord Cluny and Offord Darcy.
"It's worth spending a bit of time getting it in the right place," he says.
The Highways Agency says the government is committed to funding the scheme once all the statutory requirements are met.
